Plantation shutters are generally installed on windows, either internally or externally, and were originally intended to protect the building occupants from the hot and humid weather as well as preserving privacy. They can, however, also be fitted for other purposes — room partitions or internal doors for example.
When sliding doors are installed, plantation shutters can be used to provide protection in the same way as for windows. However, there are basically two types of sliding doors and these can present different challenges:
In each case, any plantation shutters have to allow for the space taken up by the panels, whether folding or stacked. Ours can use the same type of system as for sliding doors, so that they can be easily opened or closed by sliding effortlessly along the track and fold or stack neatly when not open.
Alternatively, our plantation shutters can be hinged in the conventional way so that they fold back when open. The practicality of this will, of course, depend on the size of the sliding doors.
As part of the survey of your property, we’ll determine the best method for your sliding doors so that the plantation shutters can be opened and closed easily and are unobtrusive when not in use. The aim is to ensure your plantation shutters function in the best possible manner and look their best when open or closed.
Patio doors and French doors are great because they let light into a room, give easy access and provide a largely unobstructed view. The latter works both ways so you may at times want to prevent people looking in as well as keeping out the heat and excessive light. Curtains are often used for this but they’re sometimes not the most elegant solution and can be difficult to obtain for large spaces and awkward shapes.
The better option is often to install plantation shutters for your sliding doors. These provide an elegant and practical solution that will ensure privacy and increased security when closed, yet are unobtrusive and don’t block the view when open.
They are also much more flexible because, with our customised approach, you can have a mixture of solid and louvered panels, and can adjust the amount of light by opening the louvers to the desired extent.
Plantation shutters are so practicable, stylish and durable, you can also use them in all sorts of other ways. They can be installed as partitions so that open plan rooms can be divided at times and then opened up again as required by simply sliding back the shutters. That allows you to create living spaces that are truly flexible and to do it in a way that makes your home more attractive.
