Plantation shutters are generally installed on windows, either internally or externally, and were originally intended to protect the building occupants from the hot and humid weather as well as preserving privacy. They can, however, also be fitted for other purposes — room partitions or internal doors for example.
When sliding doors are installed, plantation shutters can be used to provide protection in the same way as for windows. However, there are basically two types of sliding doors and these can present different challenges:
- bi-fold doors are comprised of hinged panels that run along a track and fold together in concertina fashion as they are closed
- by-pass doors have separate panels that also run along tracks and are stacked behind each other as they close.
In each case, any plantation shutters have to allow for the space taken up by the panels, whether folding or stacked. Ours can use the same type of system as for sliding doors, so that they can be easily opened or closed by sliding effortlessly along the track and fold or stack neatly when not open.
Alternatively, our plantation shutters can be hinged in the conventional way so that they fold back when open. The practicality of this will, of course, depend on the size of the sliding doors.
